American Flag Offensive at Kindred Hospital – Mansfield UNPATRIOTIC
May 28th, 2009 by Scott

UPDATE:  New video and information on the source website for TXA 11 in Texas.  Worth the read and the watch on the videos.

I couldn’t believe this when I read it.  Had to read it again and again:

For one Arlington woman, the answer was “no” after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend.

Debbie McLucas is one of four hospital supervisors at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield. Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors.

When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. “I was just totally speechless. I was like, ‘You’re kidding me,’” McLucas said.  -=SOURCE=-

Just in case it suddenly disappears. I did a screen capture of the article. SCREEN CAPTURE

Some of the comments I have read are right on the money.

I bet if it was a “rainbow” flag no one would say a thing.

You can burn our flag but can not display it in honor.

He came here to this country 14 years ago but apparently his allegiance is still in Africa.

Well here’s a tip.

Call the hospital at (817) 473-6101, press 7 for the administration and let them know how you feel.  Their contact page is here:  http://www.kindredmansfield.com/contactus.asp

Fax them.  Call them.  Email them.  If you are a patriot, let them know how you feel.

Kat posts about it as well on Cathouse Chat

gadsden-flap1I wonder how our “offended visitor ” would have felt about a Gadsden Flag flying as well.  While it doesn’t hold the same representation, it does hold a great deal of heartfelt emotion.

Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, TX, is anti-free speech and unpatriotic…

I got this link from my friend Scott on his Facebook page: Is it okay to show your patriotism at the office? For one Arlington woman, the answer was “no” after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend. Debbie McLuc…

Kindred Hospital Mansfield has a great deal of appreciation for the service that many of our employees and their families have given to their country. We honor our veterans and active military through a variety of benefits and service programs. This was an isolated incident between two employees that we are working to resolve amicably. Both employees have family members who have served in the military. The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up. We share their love of country and we appreciate the service of their family members as well as all members of the armed forces.

Yeah, big time damage control at Kindred Hospital, they have people out front right now with signs to protest their actions. Who in their right mind takes the American flag down and throws it on the floor. Come take my flag down, please! Shame on Kendred, that idiot needs to be fired, and NOW.

I can not agree with you more and that immigrant to go back to Africa or remind her of the country she immigrated too. I with I lived in that area and personally give him or her a one-way ticket the hell out of our country.

What a disgrace to our country and our servicemen. When companies and organizations fail to apply good common sense and yield to a few stupid people and their wishes shows a lack of honesty and intellectual integrity. It is the hospital’s poor leadership that is the main problem. My hope is that Kindre Hospital gets NO federal funding. There are many good hospitals that I would much rather have my tax dollars going to.

  • Scott writes:

Lip service Mr. Inman. The ONLY reason you have invited the person to put the flag back up is because of the negative press. You are doing damage control.

It should have never been taken down in the first place. Your staff should have had the backbone to stand up to the weasel in the first place.

    Sorry. I’m not buying it.

In reading the attached article it sounds as if not only was the flag removed without consulting this Mrs. McLucas, it was just taken down and thrown on the floor by the supervisor. An act of certain disrespect not only to Mrs. McLucas but to all patriotic Americans, and especially those fighting for the rights of companies to treat their employees this way. This is downright disgraceful on the part of Kindred Healthcare and their representatives.

The action of the supervisor from Africa is disgraceful for removing the flag and putting it on the floor. I don’t care who was offended, you never disgrace the American flag. As a disabled veteran I take offence to the actions that were taken by the hospital. A 3×5 foot flag is not too big for any area and if someone has a problem with an American displaying the flag they should keep it to themselves or don’t come to America in the first place. It makes me wonder, what would have been done if it was the African flag?

I’m very ashamed at the way the hospital has taken an anti-patriotic stance and chose the side of a person who seems to have no respect for the American flag and what it stands for. The hospital says this is an isolated incident between two people, well I don’t think so. The hospitals actions are inexcusable and nothing they say now will make it better. As a veteran and man who has bled for this country and given up any chance of having a normal live, I hope this story does not go away. These kinds of things happen way too often and it needs to stop. If this hospital is going to be so anti-patriotic maybe the community needs to rethink using its services. Is this the kind of hospital you want taking care of you and your loved ones?

  • John writes:
    May 27th, 2009 at 14:06 pm

    Mr. Inman
With all the negative press no wonder you invited her to put the flag back up. All your trying to do now is damage control but I think everyone who reads it will see that.

The hospital should have had more backbone and told the complaining supervisor where to go. The flag should have stayed where it was.

I don’t by the spin and I hope no one else falls for it either.

“Both employees have family members who have served in the military”

I find this VERY hard to believe..unless, of course, the African’s relatives served in the Army of Namibia or something. (I note the release didn’t say WHICH military)
Comrade…er..Kindred Healthcare should be ashamed of the action taken by the supervisor who not only took the flag down, but tossed it to the ground. Or do they really give a rat’s behind about the flag and only worry that the story actually got out? Hmmmm… You be the judge.

I agree that if this had not gotten the press your institution would have done squat about this.

Let’s just hope no American Flag wearing Uniformed member ever has to use your facilities and chance offending your “Supervisors”.

Come on Texas, I know you are better than this. This should have never made it to press. Somebody should have put the smackdown on Mr. Supervisor in that office. The proudest and most truest patriotic State in the Union, and you let this happen? Wow.

I am appalled! How dare this person, male or female, take this poor woman’s flag down. It did not belong to them. I don’t care if the flag were 50ft wide and 50 ft tall, that flag stands for something and for someone from another country that has been welcomed here to insult the flag in this manner. That is incredible. My son has served ten years as a combat engineer in the US ARMY, has done two tours in IRAQ, and on his sleeve he proudly displays the flag on his uniform. Have you noticed the small flag on the soldier’s sleeves? They take that into battle with them each time they go and if he is shipped back in pieces from fighting for this fine country, the last thing that will he handed to his next of kin, is what, A US FLAG, and this person dare to defile this. C’mon. My husband is retired Army, my youngest son served 4 years in Germany, nephew is retired USAF, my daughter in law is a US ARMY combat medic and has served 11 years in the ARMY and has done 3 tours in IRAQ. Kindred, this is a mess, you need to fix this! This will not go away or be forgotten. I am a black woman and I say to the African that is offended, “Go back where you came, your kind is not welcome here.”

That’s kind of funny Robin. The email I received from a company executive said they had no policy regarding this. Another supervisor based his decision (or hers) on emotion. The company denies at all levels enforcing any policy, written or unwritten regarding this.

How is it that your mother, and now you are speaking for the company?

Rhonda Williams screwed up as a hospital administrator. Kindred, you picked the wrong state to screw with. The Republic of Texas will not soon forget what you’ve done here; desecrated the American flag.

I’m as thoughtful and considerate of other’s feelings as any stereotype of southern women. But this being so overly concerned about “offending” over every thing imaginable is to the point of ridiculous. There comes a point where someone needs to have the common sense and backbone to simply say, “I’m sorry you’re offended, but that is your problem. There’s nothing I can do. Hope you get to feeling better.”

I think this was probably a rash decision made by one person, and now the hospital is trying to cover as best they can by saying it was because of size. I don’t believe that for one minute. I am glad they have realized their error and have “invited” her to put the flag up again. I think that now she should put up an even bigger flag. Or two.

Do NOT remove it and put it on the floor. My father is one of the “Frozen Chosin” and when I todd him about this he was sick. To think my father almost died for this person makes me sick. Ask them why they are here ? And are they here on a green card? If so mybe they should sent back.

Robin, I’m not understanding your point with this statement. I too am a nurse, at a hospital in a different state. So, I am a caregiver too.

Just not following what you mean with these words.

Also, just to add anecdotal stuff, I’ve worked at hospitals for over 30 years. I can assure you, and anyone else reading, that rumors fly at the speed of light in hospitals, just as they do at most any workplace. But the rumors I’ve heard over the years that are not only false, but don’t even have any basis in fact are too numerous to count.

“Robin…..just hang whatever you want up without asking a superior”

Yes, Robin, I can! As long as it is tasteful, and it is within my cubicle space, no one else can remove it.

Apparently, there is more going on here than just the removal of a flag. If there are “rumors” as Robin seems to think, then you have factions within that department. Those factions are apparently not talking to each other, and the administration is playing the “favorites” game. ie…the loudest one gets the decision in their favor….

To take the flag and not handle it properly is the height of egomania. This is America. While the Supreme Court ruled that the flag can be used for patches on jeans, made into purses, and generally spat upon, only a fool would do so. The flag symbolizes all the good things that we, as Americans, are most proud of in our country.

If you don’t like it, leave. I’m sure there are many countries which would be more than glad to take someone who is willing to desecrate the American flag!

As placing the US Flag on the floor is a Federal Crime, have charges been issued and has the Hospital requested the resignation of the scum who committed the crime while at work in their hospital. If they have done any less then it demonstrates they approve of their employees committing crimes while on the clock.
Of course we all know the company will do nothing which shows where they stand and who they stand behind.

This is America. The American flag can be displayed at anytime; and most especially for on a day that has been designated to remember those who have served our country so that we may have this liberty. Personal beliefs should not affect the workplace negatively.

Displaying the American flag is an honorable thing that you cannot take away from us. Ever. If you do not like this privlege we have, you may work/live/look somewhere else at your own FREE will because we allow that too in America.

Does “diversity” include every culture EXCEPT American? Are we expected to celebrate other cultures, symbols, and beliefs, but others are not expected to celebrate, or even tolerate, ours? I don’t get it.

Coming from someone with a website who helps to inflate the
masses, it amazes me that you take what occured (which if
you will see the second response-) that was truly between two
employees and was resolved, but that because of one other
employee that started this whole chain of misinformation, that
you and your site would be fair and check the facts..I have
been just as frustrated as the rest of you that the right to
our patriotism in the media is being demonized. I refer to
media outlets like CNN, etc that have taken a stance against
those of us that want our country back, our rights held firm and
our right to peacefully protest against the current government
and the stripping of what America is….I lost a family member
in the 9/11 attack. Do not assume that my “caliber” is less than
yours. You do not know me, nor do you know what and where
my feelings are on America. The worst part of much of America
is that people seem to be “patriotic” when a holiday comes
along or as in 9/11 occured. I do not take down my flags,
they fly proudly and always will. I railed only against those that are
are/were uniformed. That is part of the issue when a situation
like this occurs. People need to check facts before forming
opinions. This country needs people to wake up to what
is out in the media, online and in print..be informed before
someone instigates attacks on persons that 1) had nothing to
do with the situation, 2) that are just as angry as you are
about the employee that took the flag down 3) that because
of the situation as it was, work was interrupted in having to
respond to idiots that were calling all day and emails being
sent because people “spread” the word that they can blast
our place of employment with calls and emails. That is
harrasment. That is why I responded – one of the emails I
recieved came from one of your bloggers…so in the future
remember that what you say, type or email – does affect
others rights too. As for your comment about the caliber of
staff, this was about 2 employees, one who had the right to
fly her flag, and one that denied her that right, Kindred did not
deny her at any time. The caliber of employees is very strong
and dedicated to the care of the types of patients we serve.
This was about one person’s bad judgement. So remember,
before jumping to conclusions, check the sources – so many
media outlets spin their versions of things without checking
sources and as a result, this example is what happens. As for
me – I am an American patriot. Don’t tread on me.

Kindred employee, instead of bad mouthing people you do not know. Tell us your side in a clear manner. Tell us the facts. But, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO CALL ME A NUT OR LESS OF AN AMERICAN. You have no idea what some of us have done for and in the name of this country. I do agree that you will get calls that are not pleasents but, as Scott stated you are your own worst enemy.

Absolutely unbelievable that the American flag offends someone who enjoys all the freedoms the Flag represents. Even worse that you would force your employee to take it down! I pray I never need your services.

Wake up folks, this is going on all over the Country and if we don’t start raising hell about it, we are going to lose our Country our rights and our freedom.

I agree with Linda, she needs to take her sorry butt back home.

My Dad was an imigrant and when he became a citizen he felt honored and priviliged. And one more thing only English was spoken in our home.

    WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I think the highest administrator that was involved with the decision should have to post a letter explaining how poor their judgment was in this issue. Stupidity IS an excuse. Size of flag is NOT an excuse. It’s not like they need to fire the person, just make an example out of what happens when you don’t think straight, and make the person man up and accept their just deserts. (I’d still never go to a hospital that clearly has a messed up moral compass. If they mess up a simple thing like that, can you imagine what they could screw up in a life and death decision? Yikes.

It seems as though it has become politically incorrect to be a proud American. I feel that the Obama presidency has set the tone in leading us to an apologetic, embarrassed citizenship. And Judge Sotomeyer will certainly help him advance that despicable cause. She has already proven it with her racially charged opinions.

Another case of political correctness b/s run amok, more scared of offending a minority immigrant then American veterans. Maybe they need to run down the flag out front and run up their lawyers and liberals in its place.

Bravo Debbie McLucas – your coworker is cowardly, unAmerican, and pathetic and your supervisor is a coward, possibly unAmerican, and pathetic as well… i would ask if we could deport these idiots but since we can’t even keep the illegals out (or deport them) i would guess not.

I completely agree with the patriotic comments made in response to this traitorous act by Kindred Hospital – Mansfield. In addition to being furious myself, a couple of thoughts came to mind. 1) There is an underlying message within the damage control comments made by the hospital. That patriotism for “their” country is okay for those with ties to the military. Shouldn’t they have said “our” country? Or don’t they at Kindred Hospital – Mansfield consider themselves fellow-countrymen? What happened between September 12, 2001 and May 22, 2009? I still fly country’s flag (3′ by 5′) every day in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code. The point that I’m finding difficult to make is that unlike countrymen in a communist or socialist country where nationalism is mandated and taught by the government, in a republic such as ours patriotism is learned from one another. It’s up to us to educate our countrymen by example. Keep fighting the good fight of freedom. Aloha

I think it is a very very sad day when American Citizens are told to stop being patriotic. Why are our soldiers over fighting for our freedom when we are not even free in our own country. The USA used to be such a proud strong nation. Now we let these immigrants come to our country and tell us we cannot show our patriotism. If they don’t like seeing that beautiful flag flying high GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!! We did not ask you to come to our country. They have taken the bible & pray out of the schools. They are change everything our nation was founded on. Then they wonder why there is so much crime and hate in today’s society. We need to come together as a strong nation and fight for our rights.

I think people are missing the point. The flag is not just a piece of cloth that hangs on a pole. It represents what Americans stand for. It is a symbol of what when as a country have been threw all of the blood that has been shed to protect us and keep us free. It gives us hope. Any one that disagrees does not deserve to live in this county.

I find it very funny the immigrants love to come here and reap all of the benefits of being an US citizen. But turn around and have the audacity to tell us we cannot stand tall and be a proud American.
    GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!

To the offended African immigrant. You chose to come to the land of the free & home of the brave; & you may choose to go back to Africa, the land not so free & not so brave. You seem to be a very ungrateful person. I am appalled that the hospital would chose to keep you on as employee; and a supervisor at that.

At the very least, someone needs to instruct certain individuals at Kindred on the proper etiquette for folding and storage of the US flag. I learned as a Patrol Boy in the 50’s at South Fort Worth Elementary.

It is not difficult to learn — really!
