Google Transit? Uh… no thanks!
February 11th, 2009 by Scott

I was reading in the Virginian-Pilot this morning about Google Transit.

Public transit systems across Virginia are using a new Internet tool to make it easier for bus riders to plan their trips.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation initiated the use of Google Transit, which Charlottesville Transit Service officials announced Tuesday in their city.

Twenty-one other local transit systems, including HRT, across Virginia also use the tool, which is offered in cities across the United States and the world.

Google Transit allows riders to navigate routes, check schedules and map the distance and time it takes between locations. Transit officials hope the service will attract more people to ride the bus.

The free tool also allows users to compare costs of bus trips versus costs of trips by other vehicles.

Just for fun, I plugged in my home address and work address in the “TO” and “FROM” sections to have the system map out a route for me.  At first brush, I was ecstatic!  I would only have to get on one bus to get me to work!

But then I zoomed in on the map.

The bus is called the MAX or Metro Area Xpress.  It picks me up in front of Chesapeake Square Mall and drops me off…  well…  look for yourself.  Click the image below for a full size view.

I’ve ridden to work, Norfolk to Downtown Newport News, using the #1 in Norfolk and the MAX to get me to my office; works great. Normal drive time, 30 minutes, by bus, 50 minutes, but it was an oh so relaxing 50 minutes. I read the paper, read e-mail and enjoyed the scenery as the driver worried about the traffic.

Archie’s last blog post..At Maury, kids may come and go, but not the coach
