James, I have worked with the Pilot for 15 years. Many of the reporters and editors I consider professional “friends”. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this would have never left the Editorial Staff room with a nod. The Virginian-Pilot, for all of our ideological differences, is a good newspaper and by and large “does it right”.

A college classmate of mine --- Maurice Jones, Hampden-Sydney '86 --- is the publisher over at the Virginian-Pilot. I cannot imagine that he would ever let something like this appear in his paper. James Young’s last blog post..LATEST IN BLAGOJEVICH SCANDAL!!!

A number of years ago, an elderly man was beaten to death, in broad daylight and near several witnesses, in a supermarket parking lot. The paper ran a front-page color photo of the scene with his blood drying on the pavement. They also ran a similar excuse of why they did it. It's total sensationalism, and you're absolutely right, not necessary. I find that as a writer as well, there are always a number of ways to use words to convey something... the point is to make the reader think, not distract him from clear thinking. Christa M.
