When I was growing up, making it to a “Bowl Game” was a huge thing. Gigantic.
The local one for me was the Orange Bowl. Played at, the Orange Bowl in Miami.
And of course you had the Sugar Bowl and the Rose Bowl. Those were the biggies. Later on came the Tangerine Bowl and a few others that could be considered big bowl games. But nothing like the Rose Bowl. The granddaddy of them all.
Today I was reading on ESPN.com about the “Bowl Season”. This week on ESPN is called the Capitol One Bowl Week. Right now Navy and Wake Forest are playing in the EagleBank Bowl. The WHAT? And what is EagleBank?
There are 34 bowl games between now and the end of the season. 34! 68 teams will be playing. Some of the teams are mediocre at best. 6/6 teams. 50%. .500.
Where is the incentive to do well aiming for a bowl bid? You just have to win half your games and you will get in a bowl somewhere.
NCAA Sports and commercialism has devalued the “Bowl Game” to the point that it is just another game. Just one more game in the season before they guys hang their game gear up until Fall.
I will watch one or two of the games. The BCS definitely as my team is playing. Probably whichever bowl Alabama is playing because they came the closest to my team Florida.
Beyond that? I’m really not that interested in “Bowl Season”. In fact, I think I will spend “Bowl Season” with my family and focusing on them and making it a point to avoid patronizing any company that sponsors a “bowl” game. Though it might be difficult. There sure are a lot of advertising opportunities attached to “Bowl Season”.
