UPDATE: I didn’t read far enough down in the comments on Mr. Humbarger’s site. The Air Force has some social media sites and are listed in the last comment.
From a friend of mine, Peter Stinson, I was sent to this article by Tom Humbarger. Mr. Humbarger discusses social media, of all types and the military, with several links to in use examples.
While this is all great and opens up the military to less formal communications I am reminded of what the Air Force did (or is still doing???) back in March. My original article was blown up during the makeover of Scott’s Morning Brew but the Squeaky Wheel has a summary here. Basically:
AFNOC has imposed bans on all sites with “blog” in their URLs, thus cutting off any sites hosted by Blogspot. Other blogs, and sites in general, are blocked based on content reviews performed at the base, command and AFNOC level.
So the Air Force is basically going in the other direction.
I personally can see so many uses of social media in the “commercial” environment that I am rather surprised it’s taken so long to get the military involved. I am currently applying social media strategies to my employer’s website and it’s meeting with some amount of success.
While I classify myself as a social media/networking “junkie” I am by no means an expert. Like another Twitterfriend of mine, Bob Rodkin says:
Is it just me, or are there a lot of marketing types on Twitter with overly inflated egos? Isn’t meant as a joke, I’m serious. Please reply.
But I am in “light” discussions with a potential client who is trying to leverage social media/networking to their advantage. So when I saw this article I had to laugh. And say… “It’s about time!!!” Now if we could just get the entire military on board.
