Oh boy. When I was growing up, Schlitz was the beer the teenagers bought because they couldn’t afford anything else. It was $2.99 for a case of 24. Even allowing for inflation that was dirt cheap.
And Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR)? Well that was the beer that the guy that lived down the street drank. The guy in the “wife beater” tank top, overalls and work boots. The one that perpetually had two days worth of beard on his face and may have even “rolled his own” cigarettes.
And now this in today’s Virginian-Pilot:
Pabst Brewing Co., which now owns Schlitz, conducted some beer archaeology and reconstituted the recipe for “the beer that made Milwaukee famous.”
Uh… ok. Yummy.
Unless they have changed the recipe a great deal. My mental stereotype of Schlitz and PBR will remain in tact. BLECH!!! Give my my Killian’s any time.
Ok. I couldn’t resist.
