I don’t know about Virginia. I guess it’s just a blessing that my wife and I didn’t get “taken in” by something like this with our recent home purchase.
Gary Kafka, former body builder with a long rap sheet and violent past, wrote millions of dollars in mortgages in South Florida without ever applying for a state license.
Fresh out of prison after serving time for bank fraud, he never went through a criminal background check before selling loans. He never took a competency exam.
He never had to.

We started going through a mortgage broker our of Maryland that was recommended by our accountant. Had most of the paperwork done, and started getting some numbers back and they weren’t quite adding up. Come to find out he was padding the numbers a little bit.
His reasoning? He would quote them a little high then when it came in lower at closing, he would look like a hero and we would recommend him because of his most excellent work.
Well, neither my wife or I got a warm and fuzzy feeling about this. We figured if he was padding the numbers one way, he may be padding them another. We went with a local bank’s mortgage branch. They came in a full percentage point lower than our recommended broker.
What does this mean? We were fortunate on the mortgage. It sailed through the process with ease and at light speed. And we are looking for a new accountant (Vivian? I’ll call you I promise). Not because our current accountant is bad or crooked or anything. But if his personal friend is willing to do that to one of his clients… well… we’re uneasy.
